In Two Weeks the Mayor and Three Town Council Positions are on the Ballot

Do you know who the candidates are? First up, meet current Mayor Ron Smith.

Welcome to the James Exchange. I am Nancy Gill, your host. Scottsville residents have the opportunity to choose their Mayor on November 5. The choice is between the current Mayor and Vice Mayor. They may have different approaches to the role of Mayor and responsibilities. However, their views on Scottsville’s future are pretty much the same.

Before we begin, a short poll regarding May vs November election times. Historically, Scottsville held May elections. The cost to the Town was around $2,000. Around 2020, the Virginia General Assembly moved all state-wide elections to November. The vote was along partisan lines with Democrats voting for the move and Republicans against.

Why Write-Ins For Council?

The June deadline crept up on everyone. Since everything was moved to May, the process still adds to a state of confusion. The good news with the election being in November is Scottsville residents have a greater ability to vote for their local representatives.

Mayor Ronald L “Ron” Smith

Smith is currently serving as Mayor. He has served on Council for several terms as well as the Planning Commission.

Mayor Smith is first up. He believes in strong relationships with the different County departments. However, from listening to him, it appears he wants the Town Administrator to fulfill this task.

He is in favor of thoughtful, managed growth, and wants to continue building a strong relationship with Southern Home Development as they plan projects in Scottsville.

There is much more that he would like to accomplish with economic development at the top of his list.

If anyone has questions, or comments he encourages them to reach out directly by calling him on his personal cell phone. It is 757-719-4424.

The election is on Tuesday, November 5. Albemarle residents vote at the Scottsville Elementary School. Fluvanna residents vote at Antioch Church.

Vice Mayor Eddie Payne’s interview will be aired tomorrow.

And, as always, if you have a song, a story, an event, or an issue you would like to discuss, perhaps it is time for a conversation.
