Greetings all from the James Exchange. I am your host, Nancy Gill. Today is Friday, March 8th. It is International Women’s Day.
I hadn’t realized this until visiting a friend’s farm—primarily so Jeff could run, roam and sniff with full abandonment—and he told me that March 8th was designated as International Women’s Day.
On this day in 1917 women in Russia started protesting. And, it was women from all social stratas. They were protesting for bread and “Down with the Tsar.” This protest turned into a much larger event with textile workers going on strike to join in. The Guardian, along with other news sources, credit this day, the beginning of the Russian Revolution.
So, a little history to pass a long on this rather gray March 8, 2024. But, I ask, how does Scottsville fit into this narrative? Well, it really doesn’t except for one interesting observation on our downtown businesses. I did a quick mental survey on how many businesses on Main and Valley Streets were owned and/or managed by women.
Anyway, I came up with twenty-three out of thirty-six which are either woman owned/managed or a husband and wife team. I encourage my listeners to walk around downtown Scottsville and check out the demographics. I did include Air BandB’s, but not nonprofit organizations.
My point in all of this, is women contribute greatly to the bottom line of Scottsville’s economy. And, they should be celebrated for believing in and contributing to our town’s bottom liine.
Now, as always, if you have a story, a song, an event, or an issue—nobody seems to want to discuss issues—perhaps it is time for a conversation.
Happy International Women’s Day!
